Frequently asked questions
What is the Quick Method of accounting for GST/HST?
A simplified way for small businesses to calculate their GST/HST remittance: you charge customers the normal tax, but remit a lower fixed percentage of your tax-included sales instead of tracking input tax credits on everyday expenses.
Who can use the Quick Method?
Most registrants with annual taxable sales (including GST/HST and associates) of $400,000 or less. Accountants, lawyers, bookkeepers, tax preparers, financial institutions, charities and some public bodies cannot use it.
What is the 1% credit?
Each fiscal year you get a 1% credit on the first $30,000 of eligible tax-included sales — up to $300 — which reduces your remittance.
Can I still claim input tax credits?
Only on capital purchases such as equipment, vehicles and real property. ITCs on everyday expenses are built into the Quick Method rate.
How do I start using the Quick Method?
File form GST74 with the CRA (or elect online). The election must start at the beginning of a reporting period.
