How to work out a tip
- Find the amount before tax. If your bill shows only the total, divide it by 1 plus your province’s tax rate (1.13 in Ontario).
- Multiply by the tip percentage. $100 × 15% = $15.
- Add the tip to the bill with tax. $113 + $15 = $128.
Splitting the bill
Divide the total, including tax and tip, by the number of people. The calculator rounds each share up to the next cent — or to the next dollar if you choose Round up — so the group never comes up short.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax in Canada?
Tipping on the amount before tax is common and is the default here, because tax is not part of the service. Tipping on the total after tax is also fine — it just adds a little more.
Is there GST or HST on tips?
A voluntary tip is not subject to GST/HST. A mandatory service charge that the restaurant adds to the bill is generally part of the price and is taxable.
How much should I tip in Canada?
At sit-down restaurants, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is typical. For take-out or counter service, tipping is optional.
How do I find the pre-tax amount on my bill?
Choose “Includes tax” and enter the bill total; the calculator divides by 1 plus your province’s rate to find the amount before tax.
